Fredric Harwin, MSc, BFA, literally creates "in-your-face" art. His highly
detailed, custom-made ocular prothestics (artificial eyes), grace the faces
of young and old alike, transforming the appearances of prisoners, priests
and everyone in between.
One of less than 125 board-certified ocularists in the country, this
Portland, Oregon practitioner goes one step beyond by possessing the unique
combination of advanced degrees in both science and fine art. Many
ocularists do not have these qualifications - the American Society of
Ocularists simply requires five to seven years in an apprenticeship and
educational program.
Harwin's patients have ranged from the tiniest of babies to the elderly.
They may be victims of rosebushes, fireworks or birth defects. Despite the
state of medical reimbursement, Harwin takes the time to get to know each of
his patients and personalizes their eye with a tiny drawing of their choice.
This serves the dual purpose of identifying the top of the eye (for correct
insertion) and creating a one-of-a-kind product.
